Bit of a mixed bag from the last couple of days, I’ll be out the door getting today’s shot shortly. Once again, Charlie is one of my favourite subjects to play with off camera flash.
Sunday was a lazy day so I tried a new lighting approach for Photographing my Fish Tank. Flash from above allows for a slightly faster shutter speed, my New Guinea Rainbow is the only fish prepared for a Portrait sitting. Either that or he’s waiting for me to feed him.
Yesterday I was playing with the Macro Extension Tubes around the garden. Still rather too windy for shooting flowers and with the aid of my flash, I found somewhere out of the wind slightly.
One other thing I’ve worked out with shooting Macro this way is that using a 17-50mm lens requires me to almost be touching the subject. Kind of spooks the insects into taking flight. So I’m looking at the Tamron 90mmF2.8 macro lens mainly due to the price and it’ll also double up as a portrait lens.
Well out the door shortly to find today’s target, most likely I’ll find myself near the river again or at the local park…. Decisions.

Love the cat shot! How did you get that pic, i.e. with the black background and localized flash?
I held the flash low camera left and pointed up towards Charlie and camera in right hand, power to the flash was on the low side to. To help separate the background I went for F11 and 1/250 sec. If I pull out the umbrella to shoot through, he’ll scatter or move. I find it’s good practise shooting the animals as they don’t complain as much as people.
Great, thanks for those details, that really helps me to envisage the shot and learn about the lighting – cheers!
