Dependency

It was a rather warm day on the Gold Coast with a Temp of 33 degrees at The Seaway. I’d been watching a small cell on the BOM site develop near Kyogle in Northern New South Wales and had kept an eye on the local developments. It looked promising so I headed off to the Pier in Southport to see what eventuated. This storm had split and the cell moving North collapsed and I went home empty handed. I returned to the same spot just after 7:30pm in time for the next small band of storms to roll through. I managed to leave the most vital piece of my equipment at home – the remote shutter release. To compensate, I had the aperture around f5 – f5.6 and tried to under-expose by a stop in case of getting the Lightning Strike.

Solitary

That was the first frame from the night, not a bad start though I did miss one as I was setting up that was much larger – bit like fishing and the one that got away?

Southport CBD

Looking towards Nerang Street in Southport, I’ll get a decent shot looking this way one day, I’ll take my Graduated Neutral Density Filters out next time to try and take a little edge off the bright lights on the Pier – and I just need to keep the rain of my lens.

Broadwater

I had about 180 degrees to point my camera at. While this area had quite a few strikes like the one above and below, behind me was being peppered constantly. Maybe I need another camera?

Southport Broadwater

At times I had to seek shelter from the rain blowing in and got a little wet trying a couple of other spots in the park. The Pier would have to be my favorite place to Photograph Lightning from in this area.

Branch

I did notice a lot of blue tinges to the Lightning tonight. Also when large strikes were nearby, it sent some fish into a frenzy slapping at the surface – I’ll bring a rod along next time.

Dancing LIght

The difference between exposures without Lightning Striking. I had to up the ISO to 200 looking out across the Broadwater(Not happy I left remote at home….)

And you can see how by under-exposing by the camera meter, the Lightning fills in a stop or two.

Passing the Coast

All in all, it wasn’t a bad night to get out chasing Lightning. I still believe that Wednesday will be the day(see “Well it’s almost Summer“) Tonight reminds me how much I have come to rely on my remote shutter release from chasing storms to shooting landscapes. I’ll be getting a new toy to play with in a week or two and if the storms are about, I’ll let you know a little more
Enjoy
